Barge Group clears the way for AMEY Plc
In early 2017, Barge Group were informed by AMEY of the road widening project happening on Kennington Road in Ashford. In order for the project to go ahead, major roadside vegetation and tree removal needed to be undertaken. Highways and Structures Manager Paul, worked alongside representatives from AMEY and Kent County Council to get all necessary plans and permits in place.
On 25th and 26th February, with the Kennington Road closure installed and a safe working zone set up, Barge Group’s Highways Teams set to work removing the thick roadside vegetation. The area being cleared was in two separate sections and totalled approximately 150m. Teams worked tirelessly cutting and chipping for two days, creating 13 tonnes of woodchip that was later delivered to a local, award winning, composting facility.
Barge Group’s Tree Surgeons were also on site, dismantling and removing a rotten tree. In line with their stringent Health and Safety training and Target Zero campaign, it was the decision of Highways manager Paul to use a Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) to assist with the dismantling of the huge tree. Many local residents came out to watch the work being undertaken, some commenting that ‘it seems such a shame that we have to lose all this greenery, but it is about time something got done about this road’, whilst others turned up with the hope of getting free logs! In total, 5 tonnes of logs were cut and removed from site. This resulted in a reduced carbon footprint for Barge Group who are constantly working to improve their environmental impact.
However, work did not stop there for Highways Manager Paul, who, whilst working on Kennington Road himself, was also co-ordinating a second job for AMEY Plc. This time in Swanley, where a roadside hedge was being flailed, due to it encroaching on to the carriageway and causing near misses with vehicles.
One road closure, two days of hard work, 5 tipper vans, 3 wood chippers, 2 Highways Teams, a Tree Team and a flail mounted on a unimog... All in all, another set of high quality jobs completed by Barge Group for AMEY Plc.
